Date Squares
<<
Date Squares are an easy dessert recipe - they appeal to lovers of sweets, without the decadence of a rich indulgence.
Ingredients for Filling:
- 1 lb. dates
- ½ cup sugar
- Juice of ½ a lemon
- 1 tbsp. butter or pareve margarine
- 2/3 cup boiling water
Pour boiling water over the dates, sugar, lemon juice and butter or margarine.
Let the mixture stand until you can combine ingredients and mix them into a paste.
Ingredients for Topping:
- ½ cup butter or pareve margarine
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 ¼ cups oatmeal (non-instant)
- 1 ¼ cups flour
- ½ tsp. baking powder
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9” square baking pan.
Using a pastry blender or fork, mix ingredients together in a bowl until a crumble topping forms.
Place half of the crumble mixture at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread the date mixture over this layer and cover with balance of the remaining crumble topping.
Bake for 35 minutes or until golden brown.
Let the squares cool down and cut into pieces.
