Cream Cheese Spread
<<A homemade Cream Cheese Spread can take an ordinary bagel to new heights! It may be used with other brunch dishes or as a topping for appetizers. Create an original recipe by selecting a few sweet or savory flavors from the list below. Select 1, 2 or 3 of the ingredients from either section, mix well and chill until ready to serve.
For a savory Cream Cheese Spread, add 1-3 of the following ingredients to an 8 oz. container of cream cheese (whipped, regular or lowfat):
- 1/4 cup diced onion
- 1/4 cup diced shallots
- 2 tbsp. finely diced chives
- 1-2 tsp. chopped dill or your favorite herb
- 3 tbsp. sour cream (for extra creamy texture and rich taste)
- 1/4 cup finely grated carrots
- 1/4 cup finely chopped cucumber
- 1 tbsp. white horseradish
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
- 1 tbsp. pesto sauce
- Finely chopped sundried tomatoes
- Chopped olives
- Capers
- Lemon juice
- Smoked salmon, finely chopped
- Pinch of salt and pepper
A savory Cream Cheese Spread on a bagel could include diced chives, chopped cucumber and smoked salmon.
For a sweet spread, select 1-3 ingredients from the list below. Combine them with an 8 oz. container of whipped, regular or lowfat cream cheese:
- 1/2 cup shredded pineapple
- 1/2 cup chopped strawberries
- 1 tbsp. jam, spread or preserves, to taste (apple,apricot, marmelade, blueberry, your favorite)
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 tsp. grated lemon zest
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract (or your favorite extract)
- Sugar, to taste
- 2 packets Splenda or other artificial sweetener
- 3 tbsp. sour cream (for extra creamy texture and rich taste)
Add the cream cheese plus the ingredients that you have selected to a bowl and mix well. If desired, you
can whip up the spread in a food processor or using a hand blender.
