Sugar Cookies

Sugar Cookies are an easy cookie recipe for Chanukah or any occasion. These delicious cookies can be cut into any shape and decorated with your favorite glaze, frosting or candy garnish.

Ingredients for Sugar Cookies:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter or margarine (2 sticks of butter)
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 cup milk (water, orange juice can be used)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease or line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla and continue beating until light and creamy. Stir in flour and baking powder alternately with the milk. Dough will be quite stiff.

Turn dough onto floured surface and knead a few times to make it pliable. Refrigerate dough for 15 minutes before rolling it out.

Cut chilled dough into four pieces. Using a rolling pin dusted with flour, roll out one piece at a time on floured surface to 1/4" thickness. Cut out shapes with cookie cutter or glasses. Place cookies on baking sheets at least 1" apart. You may sprinkle cookies with sugar, sprinkles, sugar-cinnamon mixture or leave them plain. Bake for 13-15 minutes until golden on bottom. Do not allow cookies to brown on top.

Makes 3-4 dozen cookies, depending on size.

You may glaze cookies with recipe below. Create your own designs, drizzling the glaze on top or dipping the whole or half cookie into glaze. Use your imagination.

Sugar Cookie Frosting:

  • 1/4 cup icing sugar
  • A few drops of milk or lemon juice
  • Food coloring, if desired
Place icing sugar in a small mixing bowl and add liquid, a few drops at a time. Mix until blended and glaze is formed. If the glaze becomes too "tough", add a few more drops of liquid and stir until you reach desired consistency. Glaze should not be too thin or it will not harden.
