Caramel Walnut Squares
<<
Caramel Walnut Squares are a homemade version of the delicious chocolates known as ‘Turtles’. The combination of butter, toasted walnuts, caramels and melted chocolate is sublime.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 3/4 cup softened butter
- 2 ½ cups walnut halves
- 25 caramels, wrappers removed (Kraft, Werthers or another brand of soft caramels)
- 1 tbsp. cream (18%)
- ¾ cup semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9 x 13” pan with parchment paper or foil, lightly coated with cooking spray.
In a medium bowl, mix together flour and sugar; blend in butter until crumbly, using a fork. Press into 13 x 9-inch pan. Spread walnuts in a single layer over dough.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until walnuts are lightly toasted and base is lightly browned at edges. Remove from oven; set aside.
In medium saucepan, combine unwrapped caramels and cream. Warm over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until caramels melt. Immediately drizzle caramel mixture over walnuts in pan - use back of large spoon to make sure that caramel is evenly distributed. Scatter chocolate chips over top of hot caramel and let stand 2 to 3 minutes. Swirl through melted chocolate with knife.
Cool before cutting into bars.
Makes: about 3-4 dozen, depending on size
